BENEFITING: America Needs You
My name is Lan and I am a rising junior student at Rutgers State University of New Jersey. I am pursuing a degree in Accounting and Finance and will graduate in Spring 2018. As a first-generation college student, I needed extra support and guidance to help me prepare for my career goals. Last year when I became an America Needs You Fellow, I did not know much about career preparation especially since I had only been in this country for a little over two years. America Needs You gave me the skills I needed by teaching me how to write an elevator pitch, write a professional resume, conduct industry research and manage information interviews. The Mentor Coaches in the program acted as supportive professionals from different fields and helped me practice my elevator pitches and mock interviews. American Needs You also guided me to make a wise financial plan and budget in order for me to finish my school year. On a personal level, I appreciated that the program helped me increase my confidence with public speaking and networking with other people throughout the past year. The most meaningful aspect of the Fellows Program is spirit of selfless dedication and helpfulness from Mentor Coaches and ANY staff. For example, my Mentor Coach, Maria, voluntarily dedicates her time and expertise to me and I know I can rely on her for any professional advice needed. This summer I will be interning at a finance service company called Regalii, where I will learn how to collect data and develop my Excel skills. I am grateful for this opportunity and am excited about what the future holds for me. Thank you for supporting my professional journey.
