BENEFITING: Wish of a Lifetime
EVENT DATE: Apr 27, 2014
Alex is 94 years old, lives in Denver, CO, and has been composing music and writing poetry almost his entire life. As a young boy his estranged father taught him to play the trumpet and several other instruments. Alex’s love of poetry developed while recovering from a life-threatening hunting accident, when a kind stranger visiting the hospital gave Alex a book of poetry that greatly aided his recovery. However, not content to simply play music and read poetry, he began creating his own works. An accomplished storyteller, Alex has written 5 books of poetry, 3 novels, a teleplay about the life of Thomas Gray, and 400 short stories, along with hundreds of pieces of music including 42 symphonies.
Like so many of his generation, Alex also selflessly served in WWII as a sharpshooter in the First Infantry Division. He was shot during a fierce battle in Guam near the end of the war, and spent 8 months recovering in an Army hospital. His injuries did not prevent him from pursuing his passion for music, and he went on to become an active musician in churches and big bands for many years.
Alex has sought to hear his music professionally performed for over 70 years, but has been unable to make the necessary connections. Alex is particularly fond of his composition that is a choral rendition of Thomas Gray’s poem, “Elegy Written in a Country Churchyard,” a meditation on death and remembrance of life. It is a fitting poem for someone who has led such an inspiring and creative life. Join us in granting Alex's wish to hear this piece sung by a professional choir, memorializing his work and sharing with the world the beautiful music that up until now, he has heard only in his head.
