Single Parent & College Student Child Care Scholarships
Organized by: Deloris Anne
Many years ago when I was a young parent trying to work and attend college, it was very challenging for me to find AFFORDABLE child care. My daughter was under three years old and not ready for preschool, so I needed a reliable babysitter or day care service so that I could continue my education and work to keep my household going. As it turned out, I was asked to resign from my employment because I did not have consistent child care. I witnessed my daughter going through the same challenges when my grandchildren were born. She was not able to work a full-time job because the children were too young for school and day care was not affordable. It was then that I decided I would try to raise money to begin a scholarship for young, single parents who are full-time college students or single parent households that need assistance with child care and babysitting costs. On average, a day care facility that provides basic care for a child (not to include food, toiletries, or medical care for special needs children) will cost about $300 - $400 per week. That's about $1500 to $2000 per month in child care. I don't expect that I will start off with as generous an amount as $2000, but every little penny will help to off-set the cost of proper care for a growing child. If this proves to be a good avenue to begin a scholarship, I would like to propose a program to some local charities to start a scholarship for deserving parents who need child care and I hope that it will continue. It's wonderful that so many programs are available for college students to begin their careers and professional development. But we can't for get about the little ones. They need funding and scholarships, too!
