When the students of Sioma High attend classes they do so without the benefit of dependable electricity to power light bulbs so they can read longer or to fire up computers so they can quickly access the latest information. They are at the mercy of rising diesel prices because the school is too remote to connect to a public utility grid.
Empowered by Light, with the help of their partners and donors, will bring to the students of Sioma High School in rural Zambia something they could never achieve otherwise: uninterrupted power; and for these youngsters Power is Knowledge.
Though this first project will be donor funded, the long term sustainability plan is to create a model where Zambian schools can save money on their energy bills, while providing a return on investment to funders. With the technology we're implementing at Sioma, the school will be able to pay for it's electricity via a mobile phone, at a savings to what they were paying for diesel, while also providing a return on investment to fund future projects.
Empowered by Light has already accomplished so much in Zambia, having distributed thousands of solar lighting kits across the country; and we see this next project as the culmination of all our efforts thus far to bring light to those left in darkness. Sioma High School will be the first high school in Zambia to harness renewable power in a hybrid energy generation scheme that optimizes efficiency output from the diesel generators already on site with the solar panels that are to be installed. This will allow the High School to attain more lights and equipment for educators and students to utilize, giving those students a chance for a better future in a healthy study environment.
This is just the start and we need the funds to prove to future investors that our model will work-- so we can transform Africa's energy future.
