Will this generation of children be the first to have a shorter lifespan than their parents? With the rate of overweight and obesity at 30% for children under 12, it appears likely. The quality of life for these children will diminish as high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, and heart disease become more and more common. (A six-year-old child with insulin resistance and high blood pressure is not out of the ordinary these days.) Health care costs will skyrocket. Is this the future we want for our children?
You can help us halt this trend with your support.
The Si Se Puede Family Wellness Program is a non-profit organization that treats overweight children and youth in Ventura County California. Through fun physical activity, medical treatment and education, Si Se Puede is an after-school program that aims to reduce the overwhelming rate of childhood obesity in our community. This year Si Se Puede has expanded its scope by welcoming a new Community Garden Project, where kids will have the chance to learn about healthy eating hands-on from seed to sprout! Since its inception two years ago, Si Se Puede has helped hundreds of young people and their families combat overweight and obesity and acquire the habits and knowledge for a healthy lifestyle.
Unfortunately, the future of the Si Se Puede Family Wellness Program hangs in the balance as we've lost our grant money for the coming year. On August 6th 2011, Si Se Puede, Santa Paula Hospital Clinic, and Santa Paula West Pediatric Clinic will be hosting a fundraiser, The First Annual Si Se Puede Community 5K Walk/Run Fundraiser at the Fillmore Unified School District Office in Fillmore, Ca. The goal of this event is to raise funds for the Si Se Puede Family Wellness Program, the budding Community Garden project, to increase community awareness and encourage healthy choices among families in Ventura County, and most importantly to fight for the survival of this important program. We welcome you to participate in this event by walking or running, or if you can't make it out on race day, by making a donation. Thanks so much for helping Si Se Puede continue to make a difference in the lives of Ventura County children!
