Our Mission

Support our mission by creating your own fundraiser.

The mission of St. Joseph Children's Home is “Giving Children a Home.”  Our highest priority has always been to meet the urgent needs of the children.  When our agency was established in 1849, the urgent need was to provide a home for orphaned children.  Since then, we have served over 70,000 children.  St. Joseph’s is still a home for children, but it is for a very different type of child.  Our residential and foster care children come from abandoned, abusive, neglectful, violent and broken homes.  The State of Kentucky Children’s Review Program has classified our children as those who are experiencing the most acute forms of emotional trauma and behavioral distress.

Objectives, Methodology, and most recent accomplishments

St. Joseph Children’s Home (SJCH) is a nonprofit child caring facility licensed by the Commonwealth of Kentucky.  SJCH serves children from all counties of Kentucky, regardless of nationality, race, or creed.  Each day SJCH serves more than 200 children within three programs:

The Therapeutic Residential Treatment Program is licensed to serve 40 children at a time and serves approximately 85 girls and boys, ages 6-14, each year.  The children come from homes whose family environment is threatened by neglect, abuse, violence, poverty and/or illness.  Many have been in emergency shelters, psychiatric hospitals, residential facilities, and multiple foster homes.  They have experienced malnutrition, insufficient medical/ dental care, and/or limited social interactions.  The average stay of a child at SJCH is twelve months.  Children receive a full spectrum of in-house therapeutic support services.  An on-site Jefferson County Public School is provided to the children until they are able to transition to local community schools.

The Therapeutic Foster Care and Adoption Program serves about 65 children ages birth to 21 each year.  About 32% of those served come from the Therapeutic Residential Treatment Program at SJCH. All are wards of the Commonwealth of Kentucky and are referred to SJCH by the Department of Community Based Services.  In addition, a nine-week training and certification program is provided for approximately 33 families a year, while continuing to train and support approximately 35 active foster families a year.  In 2010, we facilitated the largest number of adoptions of any private child caring agency in the state, while serving the most behaviorally difficult children.

The Child Development Centerprovides early childhood education to 170 children, ages 6 weeks through fifth grade.  The CDC participates in the STARS for KIDS NOW, a voluntary above-licensing quality assurance program operated by the Kentucky Cabinet for Health and Family Services.
