The Skateistan NGO in Kabul, Afghanistan, teaches skateboarding and creative arts to almost 400 girls and boys each week, including dozens of streetworking children.
One of the favorite activities for our students is filmmaking and photography. We would like to purchase some new equipment to help our students document their stories, lives, and the daily activities at our sports/educational facility in Kabul.
We recently acquired a Canon D60 SLR Camera which is able to film in HD, however we do not have a standard zoom lens for students to use. Also, since we are operating six days a week with over 16 classroom sessions we need a backup battery to make sure the camera is always charged and ready to use.
$440 Canon zoom lens 18-135mm
$40 Canon D60 camera battery (generic brand)
$30 Camera bag
$70 Heavy tripod for filming (had one loaned to us, but don't have anymore)
$50 Shipping/transport to Afghanistan
Watch the "Merza & The Chicken" short film made by students in 2011 and learn more about our film class here: http://skateistan.org/skateistan_blog/world-premiere-murza-chicken
All of our education is built on the philosophy that it should be accessible to all Afghan youth, whether they are literate or illiterate. Photography and film-based activities are some of the most engaging, effective teaching tools we've used.
Skateistan also has special classes in Photojournalism, photography for girls, journalism for girls, theatre, and blogging.
