THE STORY:

THE GOODS

On January 27th, 2018, we come together to create a carnival tailor-made for the beautiful people of Los Angeles who are experiencing homelessness. The carnival offers career opportunities, DMV I.D. cards, educational programs, legal and housing services, as well as physical, mental, and dental health care, fun and games, dancing, donations, haircuts, feet washing, good food, and great friends help us transform Skid Row into a world of sincere connection, love, and hope.

We are raising money for the 2018 SRCOL, as well as the expansion of the SRCOL program, and our new website! More information and details coming soon on how to sign up to volunteer and how to get involved.

WHY AM I RAISING MONEY?

Because the people on skidrow matter.

In Los Angeles, our call to action is loud and on fire. More than I've ever seen in my lifetime, people are engaged and fired up to make a change, calling for justice,, and be in service of others. That fire has inspired me to get more involved on a local level here in Los Angeles.

Although we are a 'developed' country, we have many holes in the fabric to connects us all. Many of our own citizens still do not have equal access to the basic human needs like education, healthcare, and the ability to get jobs that provide for our families and our economy. Our homeless population suffers basic human needs the most. By my personal experience over five years of working alongside Wayfarer and the stories we've heard from those living on the streets in skidrow, it is still exteremly difficult to get those basic needs.

There is much pain in the world that needs our undivided attention. Undivided - as in I am not seperate from you, and the person on the street is not seperate from myself. As long as that person does not have access to basic human needs, I am not free of my duty to help them. There are circumstances that are often clouded by assumptions - a person needing help is lazy, not trying enough, an addict, a criminal, a person who cares not to give back to the system that supports us all. Yes, a person can be all of the above, but when we lose interest in how someone got to where they are and what keeps them there, we fail them. If we do not face a human being who is in pain, look them in the eyes, and give them something much greater than our possession - our time, love, and energy we are missing out on a building a stronger nation.

Wayfarer brings those walls down. It starts with a hug and a smile. It becomes a dance of affection, humility, and metamorphisis of who we are and who we can become. The skidrow carnival of love has changed my life in incredible ways. The door that is opened by wayfarer for us to make new friends and to learn new perspectives holds so much value it's hard to put into words. It isn't easy. Skidrow can be intimidating. It can be uncomfortable. A mix of emotions washes will flip you over and shake you. It can be hard to understand, but with just a smile you can change a person's life. It's happened to me and I promise you this is a common occurance amongst those who have experienced the carnival in the past.

Los Angeles is my new home. It's easy to see yourself as just passing through when in the center of such a large city - but from Hollywood to Skidrow, it's the people that weave in and out that makes this city strong. It's the people I love most about this city. I want to take care of them as best as I can - so please help wayfarer create a greater bond between the people of this city.

SKID ROW CARNIVAL OF LOVE'S mission is to transform the way our community responds to the needs of individuals and families experiencing homelessness. We are building a community of organizations that are working towards the same goal as us: to break the cycle of homelessness. We aim to unify existing communities by creating unique experiences that uplift, empower, and enhance the lives of those who are experiencing homelessness. The Skid Row Carnival of Love (SRCOL) connects people to resources that provide continued support through their journey out of homelessness.
SRCOL is an initiative, founded by Justin Baldoni in 2015, that shines a light on the often times forgotten people of Los Angeles who are experiencing homelessness in, or around, Skid Row. SRCOL is Los Angeles’ fastest growing community event benefiting and celebrating those currently experiencing homelessness. For one day, there is no us or them. No rich or poor. It’s simply about unconditional love and coming together as a community.
