BENEFITING: Cancer for College

THE STORY:

“To live is the rarest thing in the world. Most people exist, that is all.” ~Oscar Wilde

The Skip Wohl Memorial Scholarship has been set up to honor the life and legacy of Emil H. “Skip” Wohl. The award recognizes outstanding students who have been affected by cancer and truly exemplify living life to the fullest.

Emil H. “Skip” Wohl peacefully passed away on July 8 in Mission Viejo, CA following an 11 month battle with pancreatic cancer. He was 76 years old. Private services are planned. In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate a donation to benefit the Skip Wohl Scholarship Award recently established by Cancer for College.

Cancer for College, a 501(c)3 non-profit organization, has been providing college scholarships to cancer patients and cancer survivors since 1994.

100% of your donation will directly support a cancer survivor's dream of attending college.

Skip was born on May 19, 1939 in Los Angeles, CA to Emil Roosevelt Wohl and Mary Horton Wohl. After graduating from Eagle Rock High School in 1957, he entered the University of Southern California, where he joined the Kappa Sigma fraternity. He graduated from USC with a Bachelor of Science in Finance in 1962.

In 1963, he married Jan Theodora Banks of La Jolla, CA at St. James-by-the-Sea in La Jolla. They lived in San Marino for 47 years, where they raised their two children, Emil John and Kirsten Catherine.

Skip began his professional career with his father at Emil R. Wohl Construction in Los Angeles, where he began as a field superintendent and eventually worked his way to President in 1974. In the early 1980’s, he transitioned the company’s operations from general construction to real estate development, establishing Wohl Property Group. For the next three decades, he led the development of over five million square feet of industrial, office and retail properties throughout California. He developed a reputation for acquiring properties with complicated entitlement, construction and hazardous materials issues and devising creative, cost-effective solutions. A veteran of several real estate cycles, Skip constructed most of his projects on a speculative basis with institutional investment partners, and his easy-going and upbeat management style endeared him to many throughout the southern California real estate industry. His professional affiliations included the Associated General Contractors of America, the Architectural Guild of the University of Southern California, NAIOP, and the Urban Land Institute.

Skip enjoyed the early California tradition and camaraderie of trail riding, joining Los Caballeros in 1964, Los Borrachos Camp of Rancheros Vistadores in 1969, and El Viaje de Portola in 1981. He served as President of Los Caballeros from 1975-1976.

An avid tennis and paddle tennis player with a powerful service return, he eventually transitioned to golf at age 60 because of chronic knee problems associated with his many years on the courts. He also loved water skiing at Lake Arrowhead and Lake Mead and snow skiing in Aspen, CO.

He was a longtime member of the Jonathan Club of Los Angeles, the San Marino Tennis Foundation and the Valley Club of Pasadena.

Skip is survived by his wife of over 52 years, Jan; his son Emil J. Wohl of San Diego and his spouse, Caroline Rentto Wohl; his daughter Kirsten Wohl of Guilford, CT; his grandchildren Caroline Wohl, Robert Wohl, Max Turbucz and Lucy Turbucz; and his brothers Greg Wohl of Corona del Mar, CA and Brad Wohl of Ramona, CA. His parents, Emil and Mary, preceded him in death.
