Student Leaders & Mentors (SLAM)
Organized by: New Light High School
There is no doubt that young people are coming to school in need of strong academic instruction. However, more than ever, today's youth are also more in need of support, nurturing, and the life skills necessary for success. In addition to the academic demands correlated with success, students must learn to cope with the social and emotional challenges of growing up. Students from urban communities bring a number of risk factors to school including poverty, divorce, homelessness, substance abuse, violence, gang affiliation, and racism. These risk factors can severely affect attitudes towards learning and skew one's view of the importance of an education.
While educators do their best to help nurture positive attitudes and success in school, many times the most meaningful impact comes from peer-to-peer relationships. The SLAM Team consists of identified "Student Leaders And Mentors" that have shown the ability to positively influence their peers. These students have consistently demonstrated the 4 cornerstones of the SLAM Team mission:
1. Set the bar
2. Lead by example
3. Aspire greatness
4. Motivate others
The SLAM team can make more of an impact with sufficient resources to successfully carry out our mission.
The SLAM Philosophy: If your presence doesn't make an impact, your absence won't make a difference.
