BENEFITING: The S.L.E. Lupus Foundation
ORGANIZER: The S.L.E. Lupus Foundation
EVENT DATE: Nov 06, 2016
I have Lupus. I was diagnosed as a freshman in college and I was pissed-off. Really, really pissed-off. I was also relieved. I knew something inside me was wrong and that it wasn't "just" in my head. But ... I was really angry. I was an athlete. There was no way I was giving that up. No f-ing way. So, to keep me sane and happy and healthy my doctor told me to go to the pool. I went to the pool and swam 10 minutes, per doctors’ orders. Then swam again. And again. Then I was doing 50's on the 45; I was a swimmer after all. I swam every day. I had to. 5000 yard workouts. Then I walked on the University of Southern California (USC) swim team. Then came the triathlons. And Varsity Crew at USC. And ... now, hundreds, maybe a thousand + races later ... and some major health issues, injuries and constant, never-ending pain ... I want to do the New York City Marathon.
I have been trying to get in to the NYC Marathon since 2008. My parents are NYers. I have worked (and lived) in NYC for many years (I am a California girl). And now, I travel there nearly every month from my home in Stockholm for work and to see my daughter ... and ... and ... do I ever get into the race? No. However ....
Lupus isn't something I think about every day. But it is a major factor in my life. Just once, before I can no longer run/walk a marathon, I would very much like to do the NYC Marathon with the man that I love (he’s a runner and has done NYCM several times), our friends and have all our kids there to cheer us on. I decided that 2016 is that year.
With your donations and support, I am going to make this happen ... for me, my family and for anyone and everyone out there with Lupus that also has the passion to get up and get out and not to give into the pain. I am fundraising for the Team Life Without Lupus. Because everyone deserves to feel "normal" even if it’s just for a minute!
