BENEFITING: The S.L.E. Lupus Foundation
ORGANIZER: The S.L.E. Lupus Foundation
EVENT DATE: Nov 06, 2016
I am thrilled to be running the NYC Marathon this fall, and am honored to get to raise money with Team Life Without Lupus in the process. Lupus is a disease that's impacted me personally -- my mom has lupus, my aunt has lupus, my cousin has lupus, both of my childhood best friends now have lupus, several family friends have lupus, and my husband's cousin also has lupus. It's also a disease that isn't well-understood, or well-funded for research, so I'm glad to be a part of this team.
Some info on lupus - it's an autoimmune disease, so in essence, the body attacks its own organs and tissues. It's been called "a cruel mystery" because it's so poorly understood; its range of symptoms is extremely broad, and so many people receive incorrect diagnoses before it's ultimately determined they have lupus. Lupus's impact is broad; for some, it is relatively manageable most of the times; others are hospitalized routinely during flares. Unfortunately, it can be fatal; Barrett had a 32 year old patient pregnant with her first child die last month from lupus complications.
It is an honor to raise money in support of lupus research; I truly appreciate any support you can provide.
Team Life Without Lupus is the official competitive sports team of the S.L.E. Lupus Foundation and the Lupus Research Institute, the nation’s leading organization providing comprehensive support services and research funding for the lupus community. Through our team, amateur athletes gain entry into exciting world-class athletic events and raise funds for the fight against lupus. The S.L.E. Lupus Foundation's 'Team Life Without Lupus' is proud to represent the lupus community in New York City, across the United States, and around the world!
