Baltimore and Beyond: Help Us Get to Panama!
Organized by: Hillary Clayton
July 25, 2017
EVENT DATE Jun 20, 2017
We (Hillary Clayton and Alisha Davis) are teachers at Benjamin Franklin High School, located in Baltimore, MD. As teachers, we are constantly pushing ourselves to make meaningful learning experiences for our students, both in and out of the classroom. In our third year of teaching, we have the opportunity to bring a group of 6 exceptional students on the trip of a lifetime to Panama - providing meaningul service and learning opportunities that can change the trajectory of our students' lives.
The students selected for the trip are all role models in the school - members of National Honor Society, Team Captains, Peer Mediators, Student Council Members, and mentors to underclassmen in the building. In order to be selected for the trip, students wrote essays and went through a rigorous interview process - gaining valuable skills that they will carry into their college careers. Most of all, the students selected are hungry for more - hungry for change in their community, hungry to learn, and hungry to see the world outside of Baltimore.
The trip to Panama would serve to satiate our students' hunger, providing them with an opportunity to gain perspective, participate in hands-on scientific research, and learn about the changing social, economic, and political climate facing our world. These college-bound students will gain insight that their peers in Baltimore could never dream of, and experiences that will help them gain an advantage as they move forward to the next level of their educational experience.
As part of providing access to this kind of experience, we are fundraising and working with a non-profit organization called A Bridge Abroad to make the trip free of cost to our students. In the low income communities that we serve, spending thousands of dollars, even for a meaningful experience like this, is simply not an option. Please help us meet our fundraising goal and send our brilliant students to Panama!
