SMART Board/SMART Table for Manhattan Childrens Center
Organized by: Chastity Sullivan
My name is Chastity and my son Colin attends MCC. He started in September of 2015 and was completely non-verbal at the time. We always knew Colin had a lot to say but was unable to get the words out. On his first day of school, the team got to work. They began collaborating with our home therapists and put a plan together almost immediately. In just a few months, Colin was talking! I remember the first time I heard him say Mommy. It was in the middle of the night...Colin woke up and said "MOMMY WATER!" I popped out of bed and immediately got him his water and put him back to sleep. I spent the rest of the night crying my eyes out! Today Colin is able to say 2 to 3 word phrases (he sometimes shows off and uses 4:)). I know he has a long way to go, but I can't begin to show my gratitude to the teachers and therapists at MCC as well as Colin's home team. I know that the use of a SMART Board in his classroom will only help his progression.
About The Manhattan Childrens Center: MCC is a 501(c)3 not-for-profit school that provides scientifically-based world class treatment and education utilizing principles of Applied Behavior Analysis, to children ages 3 to 21, on the Autism Spectrum. Our school is part of our New York community and serves children from all socioeconomic backgrounds and neighborhoods. Our goal is to offer every child an opportunity to enjoy quality of life and emerge as a functioning member of their community. The SMART Board/SMART Table is an intuitive multi touch surface which encourages small-group collaboration, and helps students build social and academic skills. Students, including those with a wheelchair or assistive devices, have access to learning, regardless of their individual learning style. Using computers is particularly helpful for children with ASD because they focus on the information on the screen while excluding distractions from sensory stimuli.
