What SMART is:
SMART is a tutoring and mentoring program that provides underprivileged middle school and high school students the opportunity to attend private schools in San Francisco. By providing both financial and educational support to SMART students, the program aims create a supportive environment for academic and personal growth.
How it works (in a nutshell):
SMART provides scholarships as well as helps students and their families seek and apply for the necessary financial resources to attend private schools in San Francisco. As part as the program, the students go through a selection process during 5th grade in which a variety factors are assessed (including financial need, family support, student academic engagement, etc.). After students are selected, they enter into an 8-year program (through high school) where they receive scholarships to attend private school as well as tutoring and mentoring services provided by the likes of yours truly.
Why (the important part):
I have been involved with SMART (as a tutor and volunteer board member) for the past three years and is a cause I'm extremely passionate about. Having grown up in SF and coming from an underprivileged background, I know and am empathetic towards the challenges SMART students face everyday. It is my pursuit of an education (in high school, college, and beyond) that fundamentally changed my life for the better, and I believe that through SMART, these students can do the same.
