St. Michael's Fundraising for B-SAFE
Organized by: Becky Simonds
B-SAFE is a summer day camp for kids who live in Boston. The Bishop’s Summer Academic and Fun Enrichment Program serves 625 elementary and middle-school children and 125 teen counselors-in-training and has a staff in eight locations in the Boston area. Four days a week, the youngsters attend morning academic programs followed by lunch, reading time and afternoon field trips to parks or cultural institutions. Fridays, they take day-long field trips outside the city, usually to a farm, park, lake or beach. Like last summer, the kids at our assignment, The Church of the Holy Spirit in Mattapan, are being taken to Spectacle Island by parishioners Norman and Leslie James. Yay!
B-SAFE partners with 52 Episcopal churches in the diocese and about 1,000 volunteers to provide lunches, field trips and other assistance. The children and teens come from the neighborhoods around the program sites–mostly Episcopal churches–and reflect those neighborhoods: often living in public housing in families receiving public services, attending under-performing public schools, sometimes coming from foster homes or involved with the court system.
St. Michael's has participated in this wonderful program for many summers now. This year, we'd like to raise funds to continue our participation in the years ahead.
The funds we hope to raise will cover lunches and transportation costs for the field trip for our assigned camp week -- the week of July 28th this year --- and in future summers. As such, a donation of $5 will cover a camper's lunch for one day, $20 will cover lunch for a camper for the entire week. A donation of $50-100 will provide lunch for a group of campers for the entire week or can be used to towards transportation costs for the field trip.
Please donate what you can to this worthwhile cause! And, Thank YOU, in advance. Do contact us, if you have any questions. Erin Lehman 617-331-3283 cell, email@example.com
