Smith Family Support for Bataan Memorial Death March Run
Organized by: Kenneth Smith
Thank you all
March 20, 2017
EVENT DATE Mar 19, 2017
Dean Smith, father, grandfather, husband, will be remembered at this year's Bataan Memorial Death March Run, March 19, 2017 at White Sands Missile Range, New Mexico. Family and friends will raise money for registration fees for the wounded vets that will run the memorial race next March.
This will be the 75th year anniversary of the Bataan Death March. On April 9, 1942, roughly 76,000 US and Filipino troops were force marched 100 kilometers north to Camp O'Donnell and imprisoned there. 10,000 men died on this march. Survivors then faced the horror of a Prisoner Of War camp. Dean spent his capture in a camp in Mukden, Manchuria.
The March is a military event; but, many civilians choose to run, side by side. The March is 26.2 miles, crossing desert and hilly terrain--elevations range from 4,000 to 5,000 feet. The Green Route is a full marathon that requires wearing a backpack of over 35 pounds. There is a 1,440 elevation climb in deep sand. We will be funding registrations specifically for wounded veterans. Each will wear a bib, with their number, and Dean Smith's name and information about him. In addition, Dean's dogtags will be given to each runnner. The tags were stamped on an original 1942 Graphotype machine. Photos will be taken.
The cost for participant registration is $95, until 12/31/2016. Please join us, Descendants of the American Defenders of Bataan and Corregidor, and friends, in remembering the sacrifices made on our behalf.
