SMK Maran English Camp
Organized by: Jaclyn Lee
EVENT DATE Oct 17, 2014
English Camp. A weekend filled with wonderful activities for students to learn to express themselves communicating exclusively in English. A weekend filled with chances for students to become more confident in and comfortable with speaking English. A weekend outside of the rigid classroom setting, where students are able to explore creativity while learning a foreign language in a fun, relaxed way. A weekend that many students have termed "the best weekend of my life".
Unfortunately, this dream does not come true for free. Costs of transport, accommodation, meals, and activities add up quickly, making it impossible to host enough camps for the volume of students interested. My students know this, and it would be easy for us to accept this fact, and decide to give up on trying to have a third camp. But I want to teach them that with some effort and persistence, we can make our goals a reality. With your support, we can make this happen.
I’m Jackie, currently a Fulbright English Teaching Assistant at SMK Maran, a small school in the Malaysian state of Pahang. This year, I've dedicated every spare minute I have had to spending time with my students. I have developed true friendships with many of them, and I care deeply about making the most of the time we’ve got left together.
Before my grant finishes in November, I would like one last chance to interact with my students in the unique way only an English Camp offers. To do this, I am hoping to bring 40-50 of my students to Cameron Highlands, where they’ll be able to experience a camp in one of Malaysia’s most stunning natural environments. This location is 3-4 hours away from our town by bus, and requires funding for the cost of the bus rental, accommodations, and food for 2-3 days.
Many of my students excel at English, but some are extremely shy to speak it. One of my main goals this year has been to empower students with the confidence to converse in English comfortably and with boldness. I have already organized two English Camps, and the difference they have made in the students is remarkable. I have seen students become more outgoing, braver, and more eager to engage in conversations involving English. There is also incredibly positive feedback from the students regarding English Camp. They see it as a marvelous and unique experience, one that they cannot receive from only learning English in the classroom.
English Camp is fun, relaxing, and powerful. The impact on the students, in terms of lessons learned, messages internalized, and strength provided, is immeasurable and can be clearly seen. English Camp also fosters a special environment for growth of friendships and bonds, both amongst the students, and between the students and myself. These are the ties that stay with us long after camp ends, and I’m grateful that I have gotten to know and grow so much closer with various students during my previous English Camps. Perhaps it's something about spending 2 nonstop days together in a fun and safe environment while engaging in thought-provoking and rewarding activities.
To get an idea, watch my students tell you all about it:
If you can, please help us by making a contribution to our campaign. Any amount you can give will be greatly appreciated. A $10 donation is enough to cover all of the meals for one student for three full days. A $15 donation can completely sponsor the bus ride for one student.
If you can’t make a financial contribution, I totally understand. But please consider sharing this campaign, by forwarding this page via email to anyone who might be interested, or sharing it on your Facebook, Twitter, etc. CrowsRise offers some great tools for social media sharing, and we’d love for you to help us spread the word about our campaign!
INCENTIVES (they’re super cool):
For every contribution of $15 or over, you will receive a personalized video message from my students. For every contribution of $30 or over, you will receive a personally made Thank You card (in addition to the video message!). These are also helpful to us, as it will help the students practice speaking and writing English. (Please email firstname.lastname@example.org with your name, email address, and/or mailing address to receive our tokens of appreciation.)
TERIMA KASIH (THANK YOU)!!!
