THE STORY:

CHICAGO WILDERNESS wrote -

The harmless smooth green snake is native to our Chicago Wilderness Region but is in great need of conservation support. This snake not only adds a vibrant shade of green beauty to our prairies, but also a valuable contribution to our region’s ecological diversity.

The smooth green snake nestles among the tall grasses of our wetlands and prairies, but can also be found among the oak savanna, a globally rare ecosystem with only a few remaining fragments in Illinois and Wisconsin.

Your donation will help Chicago Wilderness, Peggy Notebaert Nature Museum, and other partners answer critical questions about the snake's current population, habitat, and nesting success. Funding will also be used for monitoring the species and incubating wild nests safely. As we fight to preserve every acre of remaining prairie, your support for the smooth green snake will ensure our efforts serve all species that call the prairie their home.
