EVENT DATE: Jul 18, 2014
Special kids and their families deserve a special weekend! So, Whispering Winds Camp launched a brand new Special Needs Family Camp weekend in July 2013 and we are hoping to provide another Special Needs Family Camp weekend in July 2014, but we need your help!
We are hoping to raise $10,000 to offer scholarships to those families that otherwise could not afford to bring their family to camp next summer. Would you consider helping to sponsor one of these families with your donation?
As boys and girls grow, the challenges they face can be very difficult. When you add the extra obstacles faced by kids with developmental disabilities, they can become overwhelming. The purpose of the Special Needs Family Camp weekend is to honor this group of kids – those with special developmental needs – and their families with an opportunity to enjoy together a retreat of respite, support, prayer and fun nestled in the Cuyamaca mountains.
The Special Needs Family Camp weekend provides dynamic programs that refresh and strengthen families who live with disability – offering a change of pace where they can have fun together in a safe and accepting environment. These exceptional children, along with their parents and typical siblings, get to enjoy tailored programming that includes horseback riding, swimming, zip-lining, hiking, music and dancing. They get to meet and fellowship with other families who face similar concerns. They get to build lasting memories together as a WHOLE family engaging in age/ability appropriate camp activities uniquely designed just for them.
But, to provide this kind of tailored weekend - including 1:1 buddies for each special needs child (yellow shirts); 1:1 childcare assistants for each typical sibling under 5; private lodging for each family; six home-cooked, scrumptious meals; and fully supervised recreational programs - takes financial resources.
Unfortunately, for families living with developmental disability, discretionary funds are usually earmarked for additional occupational therapy services or updated medical devices or language tutoring for their special needs child. Rarely is much left over for a family to spend on quality time together rejoicing in the gifts they each bring to their household.
