Soar to Sundance 2016
Organized by: Jasmine Bell
EVENT DATE Jan 20, 2016
Warmest Greetings Family, Friends and fellow Filmmakers!
This story unfolded in threes: a rejection, a prayer and a last minute cancellation. I received an urgent phone call from the volunteer coordinator last week. She was letting me know that I have been selected to fill the Full-Time Volunteer opening for the Sundance Film Festival in Park City, Utah this January. Sundance is one of the largest film festivals in the United States. I am excited to work with all the other volunteers, filmmakers and attendees to continue to pave the way in showcasing independent cinema.
As a Full-Time Volunteer, I am required to be at the event from January 20th to February 1st to work at least 80 hours. I decided to accept because it is a lucrative, career enhancing opportunity that allows me to network with people from all around the world. The most expensive expense of lodging will be provided for me by the festival which means I just have to cover transportation and per diem.
After graduating from the University of Texas at Arlington (UTA) in 2013, I moved to Maryland. I have been plugging away, building connections. I have volunteered with the Washington National Opera, The Kennedy Center's Page to Stage Festival, AFI’s 2014 DOCS FEST, and two years running at the Maryland Film Festival. I joined Women in Film and Video of Washington, DC to have year round networking. There has been many successes and sacrifices over the last few years because I am the woman who continues to dream big. From my new job, I learned that setting the bar high gets you to your goals and beyond every time.
I can tell you that EVERYONES’ support over the years keep making critical impacts to my life. The people who supported my past People to People Student Ambassador trips lead me to getting a job (3+ years) at the Study Abroad Office at UTA. The people who supported all my short films with donations, time and incredible effort lead to me graduating. The people who continute to teach me to be better, stronger and more mindful. The people who give me words of encouragement when I experience doubt. I couldn’t have done it without this AMAZING village.
I thank you for your support!
I thank you for your contributions!
And I thank you for helping me SOAR!
I am forever grateful to each and every one of y’all!
With Love and Determination, Jasmine E. Bell
