Join us for a day of camaraderie to raise awareness about human trafficking in our area. Have fun. Be healthy. Do good!
THE PLAN: Run or walk on Saturday, September 17, 2016 at Wollaston Beach. We'll meet in the first parking lot on the LEFT from Furnace Brook Pkwy.
Arrive by: 9:45am
And if you want: Stay afterwards for beach games and/or grab a bit to eat at the Clam Box. This will be an informal event. No bibs. No timing. Just people gathering for a cause. So bring water and your phone if you want to time yourself.
A LITTLE MORE INFO: What a vibrant year it has been at The River South Center! One major highlight: the heroic efforts of the Justice Task Force who successfully hosted a Human Trafficking Summit in Quincy. Thanks to their work, we had the great pleasure of connecting with the City of Quincy as well as many local professionals in order to share warning signs of trafficking, learn what to do if we suspect trafficking, and how we can be a part of the solution going forward.
Also, thanks to the work of the Abolitionist Network and the Massachusetts Coalition to End Human Trafficking, we continued to connect with the larger network of organizations working to combat trafficking both here and abroad. One particular highlight was the LINK event where we were able to learn more about how we can continue to improve our laws in order to protect the most vulnerable among us.
And as we move into the upcoming year, we are looking forward to increased partnership with others in our area working to end human trafficking. One step in that direction: this year’s 5K. Because this year, 75% of all funds raised will benefit Amirah.
Amirah is a faith-based nonprofit on the North Shore of Boston that provides a refuge for women who were sex trafficked. They do so by offering a safe home where each woman engages in a whole-person, trauma-informed, individualized program. They are in this work because they believe that every human life is worthy of love, mercy and justice. It is the goal that each woman served at Amirah will be restored and empowered with a sense of her inherent value and strengths. You can find out more information about Amirah at www.amirahboston.org.
The other 25% of all funds raised will benefit The River South Center itself. The Center is the home of The Justice Task Force and exists to be a catalyst of hope and joy in the community and to be the ones to use our talents and resources to make a difference in the world.
HOW TO PARTICIPATE:
1. Complete your registration for race day by clicking "Join the Team."
2. Ask people to sponsor you. We suggest aiming for a minimum goal of $25. The fundraising aspect of this 5K is not just a way to raise money. It's a way to raise awareness. One simple email, a few clicks on your social media pages, and suddenly, you are part of making a difference. The numbers and statistics surrounding human trafficking are disturbing. But there is good news. Many believe that if we get enough people involved, we will be able to see Human Trafficking end in our lifetime.
3. Show up on Race Day! (This event is all about the cause, so race day will be informal. No racing bibs. No formal timing. Just bring yourself, your water, and your phone. If you would like to stay, we'll plan to grab some space on the beach and/or grab a bite to eat at The Clam Shop or the Ice Cream shop.)
ABOUT US: The SOBO Project (See the One.
