BENEFITING: SOCCER WITHOUT BORDERS
Soccer Without Borders (SWB) is a non-profit organization that aims to use soccer internationally as a vehicle for positive change. It provides underprivileged youth with a toolkit to overcome obstacles and pursue goals to achieve personal success.
The program helps young people who lack both safe spaces and opportunity, to come into a greater understanding of their bodies, minds and voices. It provides a platform from which to grow, creates a culture of acceptance and an environment that offers support towards achieving individual goals.
In early August I will be participating as a volunteer ambassador on a SWB sports based exchange in Nicaragua. During the trip, I will assist in coaching girls soccer and other sports related activities, as well as participate in classroom teaching at the local elementary schools in subjects such as English and Math. The goal of SWB Nicaragua, is to give each participant the social, economical and educational support necessary to inspire each girl to stay enrolled in school, avoid risky behaviors and make healthy choices.
In the city of Granada, Nicaragua, 52% of girls do not complete primary school and 28% of girls are pregnant by the age of 18. While sports have been proven as an effective tool to mitigate these numbers and further improve these girls’ lives, 90% of girls in Granada report that there are barriers to them participating in formal and informal sports. Participation in SWB activities, allows the girls to receive school supplies, clothes, shoes, toiletries, and soccer equipment. The girls can also apply for a secondary school scholarship by fulfilling certain requirements involving participation, further strengthening their ability to establish themselves as students and athletes.
I am delighted to be part of Soccer Without Borders as an ambassador for global change through the utilization of sport. I am lucky enough to have been given the opportunity of a good education. I have also been very fortunate to be able to pursue soccer at a competitive level. Challenging myself athletically and being part of a team has taught me many lessons and helped shape the person I am. I can fully appreciate the potency of organized team sport and what it can do for individuals of both genders and communities alike. I would like to help make that a reality for those who have not had the opportunity and are less privileged.
Please take a few moments to watch the attached video. Your consideration of a donation of any amount, would not only honor the organization of Soccer without Borders but would better and further improve the lives of the girls who need support in Nicaragua.
