BENEFITING: SOCCER WITHOUT BORDERS
ORGANIZER: SOCCER WITHOUT BORDERS
Join me to raise $3,000 to support positive youth development in East Boston.
Because. Diversity. Is. Cool.
Soccer Without Borders (SWB) is a 501(c)3 non-profit founded in Oakland CA in 2006, now serving immigrant, refugee, and asylee youth in Greeley CO, Baltimore MD, Kampala Uganda, Grenada Nicaragua.
In 2012, SWB came to East Boston.
In Boston we serve 375 youth annually, and for the first time ever are comprised of eight teams spanning grades 1 through 12. Our kids come from Latin America, North Africa, islands off West Africa, and Southeast Asia. Every day is filled with inclusion, cultural exchange, and a learning that occurs when people freely share their identities with the communities around them.
We are kids, parents, volunteers, coaches – and people like YOU and ME.
In August 2016, I began a year of service at SWB Boston coaching the elementary school girls team and was tasked with creating the high school girls team...
…yes, there was a fall season practice when one girl showed up.
And so, we played.
Yes, my roster now has 22 ninth and tenth grade girls.
And so, we play.
I tell the girls every day - YOU are building this program. As a coach, I just show up, but without YOU, this team would not exist. Girls who play sports have higher incomes, higher job satisfaction, better health outcomes - by showing up, YOU make our community stronger.
By donating to this run, YOU will:
- Increase the US graduation rate
>> 95% of SWB graduate high school
>> …compared with an 83% national average (2014)
- Create safer communities
>> In 2015, 100% of SWB youth said they would recommend SWB to a friend
>> This sense of belonging stops kids from looking to risky behaviors for a sense of fulfillment. It also teaches positivity, love, and problem solving skills for safe, successful futures
- Build America’s financial future
>> English speaking newcomers make an average of $25,000 higher than their non- English speaking counterparts.
>> SWB teaches English through soccer – and has a TON of fun doing it!
- Decrease childhood obesity
>> In 2013, only 8% of US adolescents met the recommended 60-minutes of daily physical activity
>> SWB teams welcome all shapes and sizes and guarantee at least 60-minutes of exercise in every practice
- Make a HUGE difference
>> Every kid deserves a chance.
>> Your donation makes those chances possible
A girl on my elementary school team recently shouted during a match, "Never give up!" It has become my favorite tagline to share from the sideline; and my own life mantra.
Never. Give. Up.
On November 5, 2017 I will run the New York City Marathon to support Soccer Without Borders Boston. I cannot wait to chant "NEVER GIVE UP!" as I put one foot in front of the other approximately 50,000 times toward safe space for newcomer youth in the city that raised me.
Join me to raise $3,000 for positive youth development - 100% supports SWB Boston.
When you donate to Soccer Without Borders, I RUN FOR YOU!
