Soccerhood - Fall 2015
Organized by: Elizabeth Sarkisian
Soccerhood is an initiative created to increase participation of the greater immigrant community within South Orange and Maplewood into the Baird's South Mountain Soccer program. The result of the kids' participation is not only that they can enjoy the sports program that the rest of our children do, but that they become more integrated into our community, building stronger friendships with the very kids with whom they go to school every day. It has improved their English, and even taught them greater responsibility.
We are sponsoring 13 kids this spring with the costs and logistical requirements associated with playing this spring soccer season. This is the most kids ever, so we need all the help we can get!
WHO WE ARE:
We are a combination of local parents and teachers who have enjoyed bringing the opportunity to play to kids that otherwise may not have been able. Kate Fearon(Clinton School ESL Teacher), Jennifer Latimer(Clinton School Media Specialist), Elizabeth Sarkisian (Parent) and Katie Simpson(MMS ESL teacher).
HOW YOU CAN HELP:
Sponsor a player: Donation of $175 to cover the cost of registration for a single player, or $50 to cover the cost of new equipment(generously discounted by local vendor Kicks & Sticks).
Single Donation: Financial donations of any amount will go towards a pool of donations to cover the expenses of registration and equipment for players. Every little bit counts, so small donations welcome.
PARTNERS: The Baird is supporting our efforts by holding spots for the participants. Kicks and Sticks provides new cleats and shin guards at a significant discount. This project was started with the help of a "Togetherhood" grant received by the South Mountain YMCA which aims to support member based volunteerism within our community. This grant is support based, not financial.
NOTE regarding tax deduction: if you would like your donation to be tax deductible, instead of donating on this website you can make a check payable to "SOUTH ORANGE VILLAGE", and make a notation of "Soccerhood" in the note section of the check. Please deliver to Elizabeth Sarkisian, 500 Ridgewood Rd, Maplewood NJ 07040 so that we can make sure the donation is allocated to the Soccerhood program.
IF WE EXCEED OUR GOALS(WHICH I HOPE WE WILL!): Donations in excess of the amount needed for this season will be held until the Spring Season, when we will again be registering kids through Soccerhood.
