This "spring" break (which falls in the middle of the winter semester here at Michigan), I will be traveling to New York City to volunteer full-time at ITHAKA (ithaka.org) for JSTOR, a digital archive of scholarly journal articles and related content. I've used JSTOR a lot through my undergraduate and graduate education to access digital versions of scholarly articles, and I'm excited to learn more about the organization and to contribute to their work. Through my work and studies in the fields of archives and library science, I have become particularly interested in how to make materials more discoverable and accessible, and my project at JSTOR will help me see, explore, and contribute to these issues from a new perspective.
I have this opportunity thanks to the University of Michigan School of Information's Alternative Spring Break program, which sends students (over 130 this year) to Chicago, Detroit, New York City, and Washington, DC to apply their information skills in the service of various non-profit, cultural, educational, and governmental organizations' goals.
This program could not run, however, without the generous support of its donors. Please consider making a tax-deductible donation to support us in our efforts to develop further as information professionals and to give back to the community through our service.
Thank you for your support!
