BENEFITING: SOCIAL PROMISE INC
ORGANIZER: SOCIAL PROMISE INC
EVENT DATE: Nov 01, 2015
I am not a runner. I have been training for a few months, and I successfully completed a half marathon. This is the extent of my ability. Six months ago? I could barely run a mile. Why am I attempting this marathon? Because, it is my hope, that with some effort, I can help save a life (or two.)
I live in a city of great privilege, and I live a comfortable life. Unfortunately, there are many people in this world that cannot say the same. I was fortunate to learn about an amazing, yet devastatingly poor group of people living in Gulu, Uganda. My sister-in-law had the opportunity to visit the community, the people asked for her help, and she made it her mission. Inspired by Sharon, it is now my mission as well.
We started Social Promise in 2012. We are a small, volunteer-only nonprofit. We learn more each day, grow each day, and we work hard to not only raise as much money possible for this vulnerable group of people, but we are committed to educating children in our own community and we seek to foster in these young people a lifelong commitment to volunteerism and philanthropy.
I traveled to Uganda for the first time last summer, and just returned from a second trip this year. The people of the community are forever in my thoughts. The current exchange rate is much better than it was last year. One US dollar equals 3,000 Ugandan shillings. Our money goes a long way. $5,000 will save may lives in Gulu, and that is what I hope to raise.
So no, I am not a runner. But guess what? If the people of Gulu can walk several miles each day in search of clean drinking water, if they have to live their lives unsure as to where their next meal is coming from, if they are able to walk as many as 10 miles to receive life saving medical treatment at Lacor Hospital, and if they can survive a raging war at the hands of the Lord's Resistance Army, I can certainly tackle 26.2 in order to help lessen their burden.
PLEASE-Help me help them.
