BENEFITING: Saha Global
EVENT DATE: May 18, 2016
My name is Ryan Morrison, I'm a junior at Skidmore College and I’m excited and privileged to be traveling to Ghana this summer with Saha Global to participate in their Global Leadership Program. Saha Global is an organization dedicated to empowering women in rural communities to solve their village's need for clean water and electricity by providing business opportunities. This is accomplished by donating equipment and training for fully sustainable water purification and solar panel businesses run by the women of the village.
How will I spend my time in Ghana?
I will be traveling to a village in Northern Ghana as a Field Representative and working with the people of the village to implement a solar panel business. The process will include getting educated in the technology and implementation of solar panels, working together with the people of the village to identify their specific needs, creating the physical structure from which the business will be run, and finally, training the women to run the business.
The opportunity to donate to this campaign is an opportunity to make a significant difference in many lives, and that's not just true for the women who run the businesses. A few of the benefits to installing a solar energy business in these communities are:
-Replacing the need for kerosene;
Kerosene creates black carbon residuals which are terrible for health and the environment, and buying kerosone accounts for roughly 20-40% of the average villager's income (can you imagine helping someone to retain that much more of their income for food, school, equipment, etc.??) Clearly, helping to replace the need for kerosene with a free energy source (the sun!) is by itself an incredible opportunity, but there's more.
-Villagers in these farming communities often have to travel hours to the nearest town to get vital information about the weather and food prices.
Cellphones have become a vital part of these people's lives, as most of us feel they have in ours as well, and they need the phones to work so they can successfully run their farms.
-And yes, we're helping to create oportunities for the women!
Many of these women have no means of generating their own revenue, and have never owned a bank account. These businesses present them with incredible new opportunities for leadership and entrepreneurship.
Today, Saha Global solar businesses provide approximately 7,678 people will access to clean electricity.
Whether you have vision for a more sustainable environment, want to support a unique economic opportunity for these women, or just want to make a difference that is genuine and long lasting, 100% of your generous donation will go directly to the equipment and training necessary to run a profitable solar business. I will be doing the dirty work but I need your help to get there!
