The City of Joy, located in the city of Bukavu in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, is a transformational leadership community for women survivors of violence. Conceived, owned, and run by local Congolese, the City of Joy has flourished since it first opened its doors in June 2011, healing women from their past trauma through therapy and life skills programming while providing them with the essential ingredients needed to move forward in life love and community. Serving 90 survivors of gender violence aged 18 to 30 at a time, in six years the City of Joy will graduate over 1,000 women leaders.

In 2012, Global Green developed a partnership with the 11th Hour Project, the COINS Foundation, SunPower, Trojan Batteries, SMA, Green Empowerment and others to bring reliable solar power to the City of Joy, and remove the need for the back-up diesel generator. The first phase of the installation was intended to stabilize the power needs for the community, and put a plan in place to solarize the entire village. Thanks to Global Green, we're sending a team back to install a second phase of the solar system to meet 100% of the City of Joy's electricity needs, including a solar system for the local farming operation.
This project will bring the City of Joy to 100% solar power for their operations. The City of Joy Director Christine Schuler Deschryver recently released the report City of Joy: Fifth Session Final Report, on the work, experience and commitment of the fifth graduating class to transforming pain into power. Here is a highlight from the report showing the incredible work being done on the ground by the Congolese activist and the graduates:
The 90 women who participated in the six-month program, which wrapped up in May, 2014 have made great strides and have emerged as leaders for their communities. All the activities, from therapy to training for capacity building, helped the women heal in the face of the impossible and create their destinies on their own terms. With the help of the training and the abundant love that springs from the heart of every person at City of Joy, women who had isolated themselves came back to their selves and blossomed into full-fledged members of City of Joy.
A team of six to eight staff will travel to the City of Joy to carry out the installation with our local solar partner. The team will include solar engineers, project managers, and communication specialists. The total project length will be approximately two weeks, with time being split equally between the installation of ground mounted system, and training for residence maintenance staff in system care and management.
System size: 23kW
