This year our team is running the BAA Half-marathon in support of Sole Train: Boston Runs Together, a community-building and mentoring program that uses running as a vehicle for young people to set and achieve previously unimaginable goals. By building a supportive community of caring adults and peers, Sole Train champions youth as they realize their capacity for greatness. Since its founding in 2009 with 16 Young and Old Soles, Sole Train: Boston Runs Together has grown in the 2015-2016 school year to nearly 250 participants at 10 Boston Public Schools located in Dorchester, Roxbury, Mattapan, Brighton, the South End, Fenway, Hyde Park, and Jamaica Plain. In 2016, Sole Train will add 5 new sites, engaging more than 100 new participants. Sole Train youth train at their sites twice a week with adult mentors over the course of a school year for Boston’s Run to Remember—an annual 5 mile and half marathon race held in May. Sole Train youth learn to deconstruct the impossible in order to achieve success: they identify the intermediate steps that need to be taken to accomplish big goals, attain the appropriate support to take those steps, and develop the self-confidence necessary to follow through. Youth learn to transfer these skills to other areas of their lives and gain valuable tools to reach their full potential.
