As most of you know, I have been part of an AMAZING program called Girls On The Run for a few years now. Girls on the Run of Puget Sound is a 501(c) non-profit organization whose mission is to inspire girls to be joyful, healthy and confident using a fun experience-based curriculum which creatively integrates running. Since 2002, GOTRPS has operated an after-school prevention program for 3rd through 5th grade girls throughout Puget Sound.
I realize times are tight and everyone is very busy - but if you have even just a few dollars to spare to support this organization it would be greatly appreciated! You can donate easily (and securely) via my personal fundraising page below.
My involvement with Girls On The Run began when I became intrigued with the program and applied to be a coach at Ridgecrest Elementary for the Fall 2010 Season. After the first practice I was hooked! The program’s mission, the excitement from the girls, and seeing such positive changes in the girls throughout the season were all enough to make me sign up to coach again in Redmond the following season. I’ve been involved in some way or another every season since!
Being part of Girls On The Run has really been a life-changing experience for me. It is incredibly fun and honestly much more than a running program. I wish a program like this had existed when I was younger! The ‘life lessons’ we teach are truly pertinent at any age, but especially important for young girls. I’m honestly blown away by how much they grasp these concepts and how much we see them grow throughout the season. At the end of last season, we received a note from one of our parents stating the following about her daughter’s experience, “I have seen her change in ways I never imagined – her confidence has gone up, her decision-making in food choices, even the amount of exercise she wants to get for herself... Her coaches were always awesome (Redmond El) – overall the program is a great thing for young girls.” Feedback like this really shows how much of an impact the program has and makes all the hard work worthwhile. I feel honored to be part of such an amazing program and part of these girls’ lives!
Over the last couple of years, I have coached four seasons, been a Running Buddy, an event volunteer, and am currently serving GOTR as Chair of the SoleMates Committee. Creating our SoleMates program has been exciting! We often get approached by parents and Running Buddies who want to get more involved but whose schedules don’t always permit them the free time to leave work early twice a week to coach. SoleMates has become an excellent way for more people to connect with GOTR! The SoleMates program provides adults with the opportunity to raise money for Girls on the Run while training for an athletic event– this season, the See Jane Run Half & 5K in July. Our SoleMates participants raise critically needed funds that ensure we are able to serve more girls in the Puget Sound.
This summer has been our second season of SoleMates and we have had a fantastic group of ladies training and raising money for the program! I have personally dedicated my summer racing season to GOTRPS and am fundraising to help support this amazing organization!
Thanks and hope everyone is having a great summer!
