The Solo 'Round the Atoll adventure is the first solo circumnavigation of Kwajalein Atoll done by human power (kayak). Simply put, it has never been done; and for good reason. The Atoll is the biggest in the world. It is regularly exposed to unpredictable storms, unrelenting winds and strong currents. If all goes well it should take five to six days of 12 hours paddling straight. In short, a rough time. The RMI is a developing country which unfortunately deals with a number of issues, including the lack of access to exceptional medical care.
The point of this adventure is to raise awareness and funds for the people of Kwajalein Atoll. The Marshall Islands and specifically Kwajalein Atoll face a number of serious medical issues. Tuberculosis, leprosy and diabetes are serious problems for the local people. Additionally obesity, alcoholism, tobacco use, teenage pregnancy and suicide. The virus Chikungunya is frequently carried by mosquitoes in the Atoll. There is only one hospital and a few small dispensaries in the Atoll of nearly 100 islands. It is exceedingly difficult for many of the locals to get to the hospital, and so they frequently go untreated. The Marshallese should be able to receive excellent medical care, and we can help. All proceeds will go directly to Ebeye Hospital; the only hospital in the Atoll.
