HISTORY: After the collapse of the central socialist government of Baare in 1991, there was a power struggle between major clans and lasted for fifteen years with different clans ruling different parts of the country. Clan power struggle led to the deaths of thousands and displacing of millions from 1991-2006. In 2006 a Islamic rebel group came into power as many Somalis were tired of clan fighting and overtook the entire country. Feared to pose a threat to Ethiopia's fragile democracy, Ethiopia backed by the Bush Administration attacked the Islamic rebel group and farther led back the country into disarray. In 2007 a more violent Islamist group linked to Al-Qaeda the Al Shabab emerged in response to the US/Ethiopia involvement in Somalia and now they control majority of Somalia including many districts in the capital Mogadishu. With the rise of Al Shabab in early 2007, the humanitarian crises has even worsened as radical religious laws have been implemented by many who prior to the rise of Al Shabab had clan prejudices. As a result more than 21,000 Somalis have been killed in fighting since the start of the Al Shabab uprising in 2007, 1.5 million people have been uprooted from their homes and nearly half a million are sheltering in other countries in the region. And according to the UNHCR, At least 68,000 civilians have fled the Somali capital this year and sought refuge within East Africa. Of these, 37,000 have been registered as refugees in Kenya, including 6,500 who arrived in August. ( Here is brief recap of that history in video taken recently by NBC's Richard Engel, one of the few world reporters who has managed to go to Somalia and document the madness http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/26184891/vp/37313492#37313492 )
