I am fortunate enough to be involved with Operation Backpack in NYC, and I know that each one of you can relate to this very important cause.
I want to take you back to your childhood and how enjoyable back to school shopping was. I for one was REALLY into this! Coordinating my folders, finding the perfect backpack, a pencil case that showed off my unique sense of style (which was stifled by a hideous school uniform), and the excitement of an array of glitter pens with different fruity scents brought me sheer joy! The first day of school was inevitably nerve racking yet thrilling. Despite first day jitters, I knew I was prepared and I had my best foot forward to kick the school year off right and I was excited to learn!
Now imagine attending your first day of the school year without your backpack. Without the basics. For these families living in shelters, a new backpack is simply a luxury that they cannot afford for their children. Approximately 24,000 children reside in NYC shelters (enough to fill up Madison Square Garden and then some), and this simple excitement is not their reality. These children will never feel the pride of having a brand new backpack. These children are then singled out as "different" by their peers, and the result is that they do not want to attend school. Completely understandable, right?
To start the school year off with a backpack filled with necessary school supplies is a comfort and necessity that all children on this new adventure deserve. YOU CAN HELP!
Ways to support:
- Share the link to this page with your friends, family and co-workers.
- Donate to the fund. Every bit counts and it's a great way to give back children in need in the community.
- Come to the barbeque on August 30th. See the link for more information on the event. https://www.facebook.com/events/979690802050319/ At the barbeque, you can donate some money, donate a backpack or supplies, and hang out with friends.
These kids need your generosity and your help. I don't doubt that all of you will find school supply shopping incredibly fun and no donation is too small! Last year I had the privilege of handing out backpacks to about 30 of these children. Believe me when I say that they are truly grateful and beam from ear to ear when they receive their backpack.
Your donation will be appreciated in a way that you can understand because you were a child who went to school.
THANK YOU for all of your support and look forward to seeing you at the barbeque on August 30th!
