"Hello? Can you help me? I'm homeless..."
We get calls like this every day, and each story is heartbreaking.
AnnMarie became the legal guardian of her 3 young grandchildren, but then lost her job and was on the verge of becoming homeless when she called.
Fabienne and her two children had to escape an abusive home and were living in a shelter.
Josh was homeless for 15 years after leaving home as a teen and fending for himself on the streets.
The Somerville Homeless Coalition is our community's safety net. Our Passages Case Managers helped nearly 300 homeless people last year, including families with children. They provide one-on-one support and guidance to help get these men and women through the process of applying for affordable housing, for benefits, for pursuing education or skills training, whatever it takes to get them into a safe and stable home.
AnnMarie, Fabienne, Josh and many others are all in their own housing now, thanks to their Case Managers' compassionate and skilled assistance.
Our Current Need
Funding for our successful Passages Case Management program was unexpectedly cut by the Federal Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), retroactive to January 1st of this year (a loss of $240,000!)
As of July 1 we have had to scale back our program to 2 part-time case managers (down from 3 full-time).
We still get calls every day asking for help, and you can help us answer them.
CrowdRise is sponsoring this Flash Challenge with a $10,000 prize for the nonprofit that raises the most money between Noon, Tuesday, July 12 and Noon, Tuesday, July 19!
While our ultimate goal is to raise $240,000, this week we're aiming to raise at least 10% of that or $24,000. Plus the $10,000 prize!
Your gift this week can help us win $10,000 AND help us restore the Passages Case Management program.
Please Donate Now AND Share this campaign with your friends! It takes a village, a Somervillage, to care for everyone in need.
