The Straits of Mare Island Rowing Association (SOMIRA) came into existence in October of 1999 at the Vallejo Whaleboat Regatta when a handful of people interested in rowing year round got together using a privately owned boat. Others soon got involved and the association has evolved to its present status. Besides enjoying the rowing, we are committed to preserving maritime history and supporting local charities and events. We are a non-profit club, we maintain our non profit status by giving back to the Vallejo area.
About the benefit row
In keeping with our by-laws of service to community, SOMIRA participates in the community by donating their time and energies to local charities and events. Among these are: The Relay for Life: Mare Island Historic Park Foundation High Tea; Benicia Vallejo Humane Society Barkitecture; Yacht Club Pancake Breakfast; Vallejo Naval Historical Museum Garden tour. Additionally, we clean Brinkman’s Marina every week.
For the past thirteen years we have also sponsored our own benefit rowing event to raise money for local non-profits. This event takes place on a weeked in August. It features teams of rowers from the club participating in an edurance row from Martinez, across the Carquinez Strait, over to Benicia and down to the Mare Island Strait to our home dock. This event takes great planning and cooridination coupled with the pure determination of our coxains and rowers.
Over the years, the money raised has been donated in entirety to local non-profits, including Mare Island Historical Park Foundation, Contra Costa-Solano Food Bank, Christian Help Center and V.C.O.P, Aldea, Friends of Solano County Animal Shelters, Benicia-Vallejo Humane Society, Vallejo Naval Historical Museum, Loma Vista Farm, Daffodil High Tea Committee, Suisun Marsh Natural History Association, Vallejo Aquatic Club, Solano County Animal Rescue Foundation, and Vallejo Dream Center, Kaiser Hospice Vallejo, Vallejo Little League, Food Rescue, Vallejo Zombots.
We are now in the midst of planning our 14th annual fund raising row and are looking to our community and beyond to help us raise funds for four recipients this year. They are Vallejo Naval Historical Museum, Food Rescue, Mare Island Historical Park Foundation, and Spay Neuter Imperative Project. Our members are working hard to get personal and corporate sponsors for our row.
We will post progress and updates as we get closer.
See you on the water!
