THE STORY:

This is a very brief synopsis of the recent medical struggle that little Sophia has been battling over the last 22 months. Sophia’s Medical Journey started in October of 2013 when she was referred to a neurologist because Sophia was showing signs of weakness/delay on her left side of her body (arms, hands, legs). She saw her Dr. at Dartmouth Hitchcock were they ordered an MRI to be done. To our surprise Sophia was diagnosed at that time with Hemiplegia which they determined she suffered a stroke in-utero. We started the process to getting Sophia an Occupational Therapist through Gateways. Sophia’s OT was helping her gain strength and more use out of her left side. January, 2014, Sophia started the year off with a big bang. She was sick, sick, sick. High fever, pale skin, fatigued, etc. She was just not her happy self, the Dr's ordered a Bone Marrow Biopsy.  When the results came back negative for leukemia, a rare disease known as HLH (Hemophagocytic Lymphohistiocytosis) was suspected . After months of being sick, then getting well, having multiple tests, blood work ups, exams and just about every medical test/procedure a child can have and many trips back and forth to Boston Children’s Hospital, a genetic test confirmed the Dr's suspicions. So, our baby girl, Sophia (Bug-Bug, SO-SO, Lovebug, Chobani, Chopes) has Familial Hemophagocytic Lymphohistiocytosis, or primary HLH. Sophia's treatment for HLH consisted of high dose steroids and nasty chemotherapy  which prepared her for her Bone Marrow Transplant. Sophia underwent her fist Bone Marrow Transplant which unfortunately failed. Sophia has now undergone her second Bone Marrow Transplant and is still undergoing treatment at Boston Children’s Hospital. Her days are filled with ups and downs from her treatments and the side effects and infections that accompany them. Sophia has been unable to eat and is being fed through an IV through her chest and is battling her second intestinal infection. Also during this time Michele, Sophia’s mom was laid off from her job and they now support Sophia’s cause with one income. Family members help out where they can but the costs are adding up every day. With the ever mounting medical bills, traveling costs to Boston many days a week as well as standard living costs, this is a struggle for Sophia’s family. We hope you can help by making a donation to the Sophia Strong Fund which will help offset Sophia’s growing medical costs. We also do ask that if you are willing to donate your bone marrow to the database; that you get yourself swabbed. (BE THE MATCH: http://bethematch.org) It’s a simple process that takes minutes to do and little to no pain. You may not be a match for Sophia but you could save the life of another person fighting a similar fight…

I wish I had a magic wand to make it go away; I'd wave my scepter over you until you were okay. I'd think good thoughts; I'd send you love; I'd transmit healing vibes; My wand and I would surely beat whatever the doc prescribes. But there is no magic scepter, so I cannot cast a spell; Just know you're often in my thoughts, And I hope you'll soon be well! By Joanna Fuchs 2 years ago
