Sophie's Second Chance
Organized by: Kayla Valencia
Hello everyone I hope I can catch your attention for a few moments to talk about my furbaby Sophie. Sophie is an all black miniature Shih-tzu, she's approximately 5 years old and weighs 12 lbs. I've had Sophie for about 3 years now but recently within the last year Sophies health has declined drastically. So doing only what a concerned owner/parent would do I collected the little bit of money I had and took her to the vet. Now Sophies story is a little complicated because I received Sophie as a gift for my younger sister. Well when we first got Sophie I remember her being so scared the poor thing literally did not want to enter my home and was shaking as if her world had been turned upside down. Well when my friend brought her in I asked him what was her story. Come to find out Sophie had been to 2 foster homes, ended up in the pound twice, and was even in a home where she received all the abuse. I could have never imagined that my sweet little Sophie could ever do something to receive the type of ownership that she did. Rehabilitating her wasn't easy but luckily I already had another female Shih-tzu who coincidentally took to her very well. The moment Sophie saw her new sister Zoey that was it, she instantly bonded with her and continued to follow her throughout the house. Luckily Sophie adapted quickly and within days i had her sitting in my lap playing fetch and wanting belly rubs. When we first got her the pound told my friend she was up to date on everythinf and that her health checked out. Well when the day came to take her to the Vet, he said she looked fine but that he wanted to run some blood test. When he came back he let me know that Sophie had a hernia but most likely she was born with it but when he went over the blood results he noticed she had a bacteria in her blood. Well due to all her abuse and foul play her last owner's ruptured her left ear drum. The bacteria has build up so much that I have to clean her ear 3 times a day because her poor ear is pushing out all the infection and dried up blood. When I'm not around and if her ear starts to bother her she'll run around in a circle and then throws herself on her side to scratch her ear on the floor. Luckilythe vet sent me a wash and some antibiotics for her ear but it isn't enough. He said she needs surgery but with me being a part time student and being one of the main providers for my family it's kind of difficult to set aside the money. I'm hoping that maybe even just a handful of people could donate just a few dollars it can help me in the right direction. I've already set aside a savings account for her surgeries. Because even though the Vet said her hernia isn't bothering her it can still rupture at any time. So I've already put away $100 for one of her surgeries. I hope this will help get my foot in the door or at least be able to do one of her surgeries. She still has so much life in her and I'm just not ready to give up.
