HEY THERE! As you may know I am running my first marathon this year with the LA Marathon--Stadium to the Sea! I am running for SOSMENTOR. The charity's purpose is to "defeet" childhood obesity.
WHY I RUN FOR SOSMENTOR:
Childhood obesity has more than tripled in the last 20 years. Today 1 in 3 kids in America is obese or overweight. Alarming? In a world where most children suffer from hunger and malnutrition, who would want to support the child who has too many burgers, thankgiving turkey, or soda pop?
Well, with obesity comes a girth of other problems: low self-esteem, depression, breathing problems, high blood pressure, sleep apnea, heart murmurs, heart disease, cancer, digestive problems, and other problems. Obesity is a death sentence. It is literally killing our children prematurely.
Some may say, can't the child just put the fork down? Its not that easy. To many of these individuals, food is a comfort food to mask another underlying condition.
You see our children need our help. They need to understand that healthy food means healthy minds and healthy bodies.
Healthy food is also just as good as that junk food we call "happy meals."
Our families need to see that they CAN afford healthy nutritious food.
Our children need to see that it is just as much fun (or more!!) to break a sweat than to play angry birds.
If we can get our children to eat healthfully and create healthy habits, they will grow into healthy and happy adults!!
WHAT SOS MENTOR DOES:
SOSMentors serve as community health advocates and healthy role models for the kids. I am running in the 2012 Honda LA Marathon to defeat childhood obesity by raising funds for nutrition and fitness education programs.
HOW YOU CAN HELP!!!:
Give me a reason to run. You can donate to my page here. Every dollar will save our generation from the most deadly condition that is plaguing our children and our families.
Also, I would be delighted to see you all here on marathon day to cheer me on, Sunday March 18, 2012!! You can high five me at mile 16 or roar with me at mile 26.2.
I appreciate your support!
From my heart to yours, and for all of our children,
