Every day, South Bronx United works towards its mission of helping at-risk and immigrant youth build character, teamwork, and leadership skills so that they can achieve success in high school, college, their careers, their communities, and beyond.
SBU believes that the game of soccer can help make children “healthier, happier and more confident.”
We feel that soccer – like running – can be the catalyst for building leadership skills, such as responsibility and teamwork. Our focus on the South Bronx neighborhood – a socioeconomically disadvantaged community that has among the nation’s highest obesity rates – brings together New Yorkers from different religions and nationalities to celebrate physical activity and its many benefits. Furthermore, we leverage the youth’s interest in soccer to provide more comprehensive programs and services including academic enrichment, college prep, mentoring, counseling, immigrant legal services, and much more.
Our impact on the community is substantial and vital. Last year, 100% of students SBU Academy graduated from high school and of those students 37 enrolled in a college or university. We provided legal counsel for over 50 immigration cases leading to 11 students obtaining green cards. Moreover, our impact has grown exponentially and we now reach over 1,000 children across all SBU programs.
