BENEFITING: OVARIAN CANCER SYMPTOM AWARENESS ORGANIZATION
EVENT DATE: Jun 23, 2012
I am writing to ask for your support. I have signed up for the South Beach Triathlon in South Haven, MI on June 23rd. I will be participating in this event to honor my friend, Susan Roman. Susan lost her heroic fight with Ovarian cancer on March 5th. Susan fought valiantly for several years and has made much progress in making women aware of the symptoms of ovarian cancer through her organization - OCSA (Ovarian Cancer Symptom Awareness). Ovarian cancer is a very silent killer among women simply because the symptoms are such we, as women, have almost all experienced at one time or another. For men, it has quietly taken mothers, wives, sisters, daughters and friends. Here are symptoms that accompany this cancer:
Difficult menstrual cycles
Unusual weight gain
Sense of urgency or higher frequency to urinate
Difficulty eating or feeling full quickly
Pain with intercourse
While I’m not asking you to come see me sweat, I am asking you to help me honor Susan and her organization with any kind of donation you feel led to make. I would like to continue it’s much needed mission of making women aware of this cancer with your donation and I will match any amount you’ve given up to a total of $1000.
I have begun to train for the event and will most definitely have apprehension the day of. This is an USAT (United States of America Triathlon) event. Which means that some of the participants will be trying to make time to compete in the Ironman competition. Competitive people lead to aggressive racing. Aggressive racing means a kick in the head while swimming, passing quickly during the biking segment which can lead to accidents and thankfully the running segment at the end is fairly safe because everyone is pretty tired. I will also be swimming in Lake Michigan and you never know what the temperment of the lake will be that morning!
All of the above means very little in comparison to what my friend and her family has had to endure! Therefore, I will face the day with Susan’s courage and perseverance in my heart. Please send up prayers for her family as they embrace the loss of this wonderful woman and please pray for my health and safety as I train for the race.
Would you please send your check made out to OCSA and send it to my address: 143 N. Hager Ave., Barrington, IL 60010. I will collect all of the donations, match what has been given and then present it to Rick Roman. I will also send pictures and a quick letter to let you know how the race went.
