Hello everyone! Thanks so much for visiting my 2013 Boston Marathon fundraising page! I started my 18+ week training program during the first week of December and I'll try to keep this page updated over the next few months so you can see how my training and fundraising is going.
A little about the Boston Marathon and why it's so special to me:
Since moving to Boston in 2003, the Boston Marathon has always facinated me. I have always marvelled at the endurance, training, mental toughness and sheer willpower that the course commands and I have made it a point to watch every race and cheer on the runners at street level. The crowd, the excitement and the display of human spirit are a sight to behold. If you have have never experienced the Boston Marathon in person, you really should.
I have watched in awe as friends run this race. I've tracked them on GPS and on web sites, and then waited in crowds 4 or 5 people deep just to catch a glimpse or shout their names as they pass by. The crowds are sometimes deafening and can be just as rowdy in Brookline as they are leading up to Copley. Those who have run it tell me that there is no other race - or experience - like it in the world.
The marathon never fails to give me goosebumps and I know that it will be an emotional and deeply fulfilling experience when I run it. Simply put, running the Boston Marathon will be a dream come true for me.
I feel extremely fortunate to be able to share this experience with the South Boston Boys & Girls Club. Not only does the money I raise go directly to the program, but I have seen first-hand what a class-act this organization is. Our leader and guru, Harry Duvall, is a tireless champion of the Club. His energy and enthusiasm for his work and for the good that this opportunity will bring, is contagious.
Of course, the real motivation are the kids that the South Boston Boys & Girls Club works with. Each young person that I have connected with on my visits are polite, outgoing, and focused. They relish the opportunities that the club affords them - whether they are leadership courses, sporting activities, arts programs, educational trips, celebrity visitors or just having an afternoon hang out spot - you can tell that the Club is so much more than just a place to go.
I would like to say a heartfelt thank you to my family members and especially to my wife for ALWAYS being 100% supportive during my races and all of my training runs. I may be doing the miles, but they adjust their lifestyles to accomodate me and my training. To my friends and co-workers - I hope to see you out on the course - high fives and shouts will be much appreciated.
A special thank you to the South Boston Boys & Girls Club and my Marathon teammates.
Running a marathon is no easy feat.
Being a kid in urban Boston is not easy.
So we run for them.
