EVENT: 2015 Boston Marathon
EVENT DATE: Apr 20, 2015
On April 20, 2015 I will be running the Boston Marathon (yikes!) to raise money for the South Shore Hospital Cancer Center. Although this is going to be an incredibly difficult task, I am even more motivated by the excitement of knowing that it will benefit such a worthy cause.
I had the opportunity, while I was in high school, to volunteer on an Oncology floor at St. John's Health Center in Santa Monica, CA. It was there I realized I wanted to be a nurse. I was inspired by every cancer patient I met that summer. Each one taking on the battle of their cancer treatment head on with such fearless determination, it was incredible. When I graduated nursing school I was able to work at St. John's and once again care for and learn from these extraordinary patients. My journey has taken me back home and I am now an RN at South Shore Hospital. Although now I am on the Birthing Unit catching babies, I first started at SSH on a Medical Surgical floor where I cared for a variety of patients who were receiving treatment for multiple illnesses including cancer. The cancer patients I had the honor of caring for always expressed to me how grateful they were that they were able to get the very best care for their specific condition while staying local. With all of the scariness of cancer, at least getting top notch care close to home makes the battle a little bit more comfortable.
I cannot think of a worthier cause to marathon train in New England winter conditions for than supporting the South Shore Cancer Center. I have so many friends and family personally touched by cancer and who have utilized this cancer center for the very best care. I have completed a marathon before (the Marine Corps Marathon in Washington DC) and as a member of the South Shore Hospital Cancer Center team I have access to all the support available in order to crush heart break hill. I just need your help in fundraising for this deserving cause. I promise to keep you updated on the trials and tribulations of my training as well as the big marathon day.
I thank you from the bottom of my heart for supporting me and the South Shore Cancer Center Team!
With so much love,
RN, South Shore Hospital Birthing Unit

Thanks to the ongoing partnership with John Hancock Financial, the South Shore Hospital Boston Marathon Team has been able to raise $325,000 since inception through the Boston Marathon to support its mission of healing, caring and comforting. As the largest hospital in the region and the 7th largest in Massachusetts, South Shore Hospital receives over 400,000 patient visits each year. Patients and their families have access to the most advanced medical care through the Hospital’s longstanding clinical affiliations with Children’s Hospital, Dana Farber Cancer Institute and Brigham and Women's Hospital.
The 2015 South Shore Hospital Marathon Team will support our comprehensive cancer care program. Cancer is the leading cause of death in Massachusetts and the single biggest health threat to the 725,000 residents of the South Shore. At South Shore Hospital, a program was developed in response to high patient demand for world-class cancer care close to home. Each year, more than 1,000 new patients seek care at our Dana-Farber/Brigham and Women’s Cancer Center in clinical affiliation with South Shore Hospital. Marathon funds will support the latest diagnostic technology, advanced surgical procedures, comprehensive inpatient care and access to clinical trials, new therapies and expert clinicians.
