Spare A Penny for Otto
Organized by: Alexis Richardson
Please pray for my baby boy and take a second to listen to his story. No words, or pictures can begin to express or justify the pure love and loyalty that comes from this living being I call my pride and joy. I don't know where I would be without his truly unconditional love but I definitely wouldn't want to find out. Some people get it, others never will, but sometimes all you need is a reason, and whatever that reason may be, even when the going gets tough and your walls start caving in.. That reason will push you, pull you, and guide you but most of all remind you that you have at the least one good reason to never give up. Otto is my reason. They say I've taught him so much but if I could only begin to explain what he has taught me in his short two years, you may be able to understand. Forever more than a dog but my best friend. After being struck by a Jeep at 40mph on the road at the end of my driveway, he is in critical condition. While all the wounds look bad enough themselves, as I felt him fading in my hands immediately after getting him back to the house he was rushed to the hospital where they refused to give any attention without a $500 deposit which would promise him a dose of sedations and oxygen while they looked into the further attention he would need. I gave everything I had and made a phone call or two and shortly he was taken back to be examined. It didn't take long for the doctor to come back and inform me that there was some pretty severe internal bleeding and let me know she would come back with an estimate. That estimate she returned with totaling $3200 worth of work and procedures that needed to be done to simply keep him sustained but also informed that did not guarantee that he would make it. I looked at her eyes full of tears in despair trying to explain to her that he is all that I have and I'm merely a 23 year old girl who's mom died when she was 17 and who's dad was never around out in the world supporting myself and living on my own, that it was simply impossible for me to come up with such money and begged her with everything I had to do what she could to help me. She told me I have 30 min and she will need to take him off oxygen, adding that her best suggestion would be to put him down because he more than likely wouldn't make it. I waited every last second of that 30 min to keep him as comfortable as possible and was scolded for being a bad pet owner for taking him home and not treating him. Praying through the night and never leaving his side, doing as much as I could to keep him comforted and stable first thing in the morning at 7 am I took him to his regular vet to get a second opinion other than VCA Animal Hospital who is already known for a bad rep. She didn't charge me an office visit because of circumstances and I simply was wanting an estimate write up of the procedure expenses as well as medication that will be needed post surgery. I was told that the local shelter would possibly be able to help and made a trip there with both estimates from both vets in hopes that something was better than nothing. They offered a whopping $60 to a statement showing he needs $5000 of work, treatment, and medication and wished me the best of luck as they sent me on my way. My dog is left suffering with so much life left to live and I am completely out of resources. I don't know what else to do but I can not lose my best friend. Please help me raise the money to keep him stable, to get him through surgery, and to ensure that he will be able to live the healthy, playful loving life I always promised. Anything helps and is so gratefully appreciated. Thank you for your time.
