A baby dies from Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) every two hours in the United States. How do I know this? Because my three-month-old daughter Mia Roance was one of them. She would have turned four last December. I think often about the things that I'll never get to see her do: talk, walk, play sports, her first date, prom, get married; hug and kiss me again. And that always leads me to wonder why we aren't closer to identifying the cause. And even though doctors, scientists and researchers are making progress, they are still a long way off from figuring it out.
The terrible thing about SIDS is that the only warning sign is death. In Mia's case, she was a perfectly healthy little girl who was here one second and looking down on me from heaven the next.
Which brings me to why we started this Crowdrise campaign. We've put together a team of compassionate, caring and dedicated individuals to run in a Reebok Spartan Race for SIDS awareness. The one we're running in takes place in Atlanta in March of 2016. It covers 3-5 miles and has over 20 obstacles! These obstacles represent the aftermath of the loss of a child that we in the grieving community encounter. And we're going to conquer each one as we conquer each breath we take every day.
Spartans for SIDS is going to donate 100% of any money we raise directly to SIDS research...every single penny. Additionally, our SPARTANS will be writing the names of babies who have passed away to SIDS on our bodies to carry them with us when we race. We want to honor them, keep their memory alive and honor the families that couldn't be there with us to run. To date, we have nearly 140 names! We hope and pray that you'll join with us in our campaign. We hope and pray that you'll join with us in giving our babies a voice.
