WHY I AM RUNNING FOR SPAULDING
Elizabeth (Lizzie) Conover is one of my dearest and closest friends, and almost 9 years ago she was told she would never run again.
Backing up the story a bit, Lizzie and I met our freshman year Boston University on the sailing team and became fast friends and then roommates. In the spring of 2006 Lizzie went to Cape Town, South Africa to study abroad. Towards the end of the semester, on her 21st birthday, she was in a skydiving accident. The parachute collapsed and she free fell the last 200 feet. She was flown home to Rhode Island and underwent surgery to reattach her pelvis to her spine and repair her shattered tailbone with lots of pins. The doctors said she would be able to walk again, but would probably not run.
If you know Lizzie, you know this prognosis was not what she wanted to hear. She was had been training for a half marathon when all of this happened and was a very active person. She spent the summer at Spaulding in the West End of Boston relearning how to walk. She still to this day speaks so highly of the staff and level of care she received. Spaulding played a vital part in her recovery.
Lizzie runs now, and she runs far. She has completed 5 half marathons and we will be running her first marathon together in Boston on April 20, 2015!!!! I cannot begin to explain how excited I am.
April of 2013 marked the 7 year anniversary of Lizzie’s accident. We celebrated by running from our apartments in South Boston to Spaulding's new location in Charlestown - a little over 10 miles. It is truly incredible to see how far both she and Spaulding have come.
And I know the story doesn’t end here. Spaulding helps so many people like Lizzie on a daily basis. From the victims of the marathon bombing to children with brain damage and everything between - Spaulding improves the quality of life for so many people. That is a priceless gift.
I am running for Spaulding's Race for Rehab team to say thank you for ensuring I have Lizzie as a running buddy for many years to come and to do my small part in helping others benefit from the amazing care Spaulding has to offer.

Running for a Purpose:
Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital is proud to once again partner with John Hancock as part of their non-profit marathon program. In 2014, our Race for Rehab team members raised over $775,000 to support Spaulding - providing advancements to patient care, teaching, research and capital improvements. For the past 9 years, Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital has recruited more than 200 individuals, who have raised 2 million dollars in support of the hospital.
We are so thankful for the hard work and dedication of all of our runners, as well as the friends and family members who support them.
Spaulding's 2014 team, the largest team in Spaulding's history, was dedicated to all those that were impacted by the tragic events of the 2013 Boston Marathon. Spaulding’s new facility in the Charlestown Navy Yard opened two weeks following the Marathon bombing serving 32 inpatients, including 15 who endured amputations and would need to learn how to walk on prosthetic limbs. Spaulding’s mantra, Find Your Strength, has never been more appropriate. Spaulding was there to help the survivors find their strength, and will be there for every patient who needs us in the future.
