BENEFITING: Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital
ORGANIZER: Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital
EVENT: 2017 Boston Marathon
EVENT DATE: Apr 17, 2017
Tim: I’m at Spaulding Rehab 2-3 days a week for a number of reasons. Because I spend so much time there, I’m fortunate to witness the life-changing care that thousands of patients receive each year. Observing people take their first steps after an accident, or being fit for prosthetics after a surgery, or learning to adapt their personal care for greater independence, or how to get back to things they’re passionate about, like cooking or card games, is so incredibly powerful. But equally as powerful is witnessing the selfless hard work put in by staff and other members of the Spaulding community. The world class therapists, the doctors and nursing staff, and even the support staff, are unlike any hospital I’ve seen (and due to my own spinal cord injury, I’ve seen many), providing some of the best care in the country. For these reasons, and so many others, there’s no other charity I’d rather represent while pushing my racing chair in the Boston Marathon.
Eileen: My ultimate motivation for running is my teammate on this journey, my brother, Tim. He was paralyzed in a car accident ten years ago. Tim is an unstoppable force and has had the amazing good fortune to work with Spaulding as they further their research into spinal cord injuries. He’s pictured above walking in an exoskeleton, just one example of the multitude of incredible things done at Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital. The incredible staff of Spaulding give help and hope to so many patients.
Please help us support the incredible people supporting the patients who need it most. Thank you so, so much!
Spaulding Rehabilitation Network is proud to be an official BAA Charity Team for the 2017 Boston Marathon. Over the past 12 years, more than 350 runners have raised over $3.5 million directly supporting Spaulding's patients. Funds raised through the Race for Rehab program have provided advancements to patient care, education, research innovation and capital improvements. Every dollar supports our mission to improve the quality of life for persons recovering from or learning to live fully with illness, injury or disability.
This year, funds raised will support the many research initiatives within the Spaulding Network. Our research aims to improve the care we provide as well as patient outcomes in clinical areas such as spinal cord injury, brain injury, musculoskeletal and neurological disorders.
We are so thankful for the hard work and dedication of all of our runners, as well as the friends and family members who support them. Our team is comprised of former patients, family members, loyal volunteers and dedicated staff. Together, we will help our patients find their strength.
