the race is run
October 24, 2016
A recent article in the Tampa newspaper introduced me to the Cameron Gallagher Foundation.
After reading it, it was clearly a call to do something. As many of you know, I lost my 21 yr-old son, Aidan, to suicide last summer, after a long battle with depression through his teen years. Aidan was an incredibly bright young man and prior to the later teen years, a gregarious, fun-loving person. His true nature was overrun by the struggles of the teen years and even after multiple professional interventions, he lost his battle.
In reading about Cameron and her family, I could only respond with a desire to help raise awareness. A few quick facts regarding the need to do something:
1. Suicide is the SECOND leading cause of death for ages 10-24. (2014 CDC WISQARS)
2. Suicide is the SECOND leading cause of death for college-age youth and ages 12-18. (2014 CDC WISQARS)
3. More teenagers and young adults die from suicide than from cancer, heart disease, AIDS, birth defects, stroke, pneumonia, influenza, and chronic lung disease, COMBINED.
I have been given an amazing opportunity to raise money to support the CKG Foundation which will be supporting the Crisis Center of Tampa Bay. The money raised will go directly to support the programs that deal with teenage depression. On Saturday, October 22nd, we will have a 5K walk/run at Al Lopez Park in Tampa.
