BENEFITING: The Cameron K Gallagher Foundation
EVENT: Speak Up Germany 2016
EVENT DATE: Jul 17, 2016
I will never forget the day that the endurance world heard the news of Cameron Gallagher and her passing at the Shamrock Half Marathon. It did not take long for it to spread around the endurance community in Richmond and soon after the running world itself. I have learned throughout my life that God can take a tragedy and use it to make an immense impact for a positive purpose. I firmly believe that Cameron Gallagher's death has saved more lives than anyone could count. Soon after her passing many learned of her desire to help youth who struggle with depression. From a young girl who had struggled with this herself she had the courage one day to speak up and ask for help. Soon after she wanted to help her peers who may want to hide their depression and organized a 5k to raise awareness calling it the "Speak Up 5k" giving them an outlet to speak up about their struggle. Today the Cameron K. Gallagher Foundation has 5k races all of the country, raising awareness and financial support to a non-profit that help with youth mental health issues. http://www.mentalhealth4kids.org.
This cause is personal to me because I believe it has saved two of my closest friends lives. I will never forget the day that one of my best friends told me he was depressed and struggled with thoughts of suicide. I will be honest and say I did not know what to say or do. I remember listening to him and praying at the same time asking God to give me the words to say. I walked away from that conversation and called another friend of ours right away. I told him about the conversation and did not know what to do. Soon after he talked to our friend who was hurting and was able to get him help through the Cameron K. Gallagher Foundation. Our friend will tell you that he felt a 10 year weight fall off his shoulders and through the help he was given is now happier than ever. Read his powerful blog post HERE and how you can get involved in his giving back the foundation.
I feel extremely blessed to have the Gallagher's in my life and to daily hear how this foundation is making an impact. When David Gallagher approached me about racing Challenge Roth (http://www.challenge-roth.com/home.html) to raise awareness and money for the foundation I immediately wanted to jump on the opportunity. I have committed to raising $5,000 for the foundation and would be grateful for the opportunity of other partnering with me in this. If you would like to support the foundation and be a part of this incredible journey with us, please consider donating to this cause. If you would like to talk to me about this or have any questions please do not hesitate to email me at firstname.lastname@example.org or call me at 434-665-1123. FIGHT. FINISH. FAITH. Let's finish this!
