I began Special Books by Special Kids (SBSK) with the desire to share the unique talents and incredible personalities of the students in his special education classroom with others. I feared the isolation the neurodiverse community often faces would limit his student’s ability to meet their full potential and positively impact society. Without the backing of a publisher, what started as an idea for a book series became a multi-media movement. I now travel the world and interview individuals with a diagnosis about life from their perspective.
Incorporated in 2016, Special Books by Special Kids, Inc. (SBSK) is a non-profit whose mission is to lead a multi-media movement that spreads empathy, understanding and acceptance for neurodiverse individuals. SBSK’s primary platform for actuating our mission is our Facebook page at www.facebook.com/specialbooksbyspecialkids. After only one year the SBSK family includes over 690,000 individuals and spans over 85 countries around the world. We travel both nationally and internationally, conducting interviews of diverse individuals and diagnosis and performing speaking engagements to build a global dialogue around neurodiversity. Our video content averages a reach of over a million individuals. Some videos have even achieved viral status, with features on ABC World News Tonight, Fox, CNN, CBS, Google, NowThis!, Buzzfeed, and other national affiliates.
Special Books by Special Kids is a 501(c)3 organization that seeks to normalize the diversity of the human condition under the pillars of honesty, respect, mindfulness, positivity and collaboration. This multi-media movement supports the acceptance and celebration of all members of the neurodiverse community regardless of diagnosis, age, race, religion, income, sexual orientation, gender or gender expression.
